Where and when can you visit the rum distilleries on Marie-Galante?
It's impossible to visit Marie-Galante without discovering its famous distilleries. The island, renowned for producing some of the world's finest agricultural rums, still boasts three working distilleries: Connecting rod, Bellevue and Father Labat (Distillerie Poisson). Each perpetuates ancestral know-how and offers visitors an authentic immersion in the rum-making process.
Distilleries are generally open mornings only, until 1pm, no reservation necessary. It's advisable to get there early to make the most of the visit, taste the different vintages and chat with the teams on site.
The ideal time to visit? Between February and June, during the sugar cane harvest (the «sugar campaign»). At this time, the machines are running at full speed, the stills are heating up, and you can observe all the stages of distillation live.
