When you plan a vacation in Guadeloupe, you think about your accommodation, your rental car, the itineraries you'll be taking, but very rarely about the parking.
And yet it's a real question when you don't know the territory.
→ The good news: parking in Guadeloupe remains simple overall.
→ The nuance: it's not quite uniform everywhere.
To help you see things more clearly, the ZeWelcome team has prepared the following a useful guide to parking in Guadeloupe pour comprendre comment ça fonctionne 🚘
The general rule
Guadeloupe is a French department subject to (almost) the same rules as mainland France. That is to say, outside town centers and certain high-traffic areas, most parking is free.
This is the case for :
- Most beaches
- Natural sites such as rivers, parks and the Soufrière volcano
- Residential neighborhoods
- National and departmental roadsides
There is no single policy across the archipelago. Each commune sets its own rules via municipal by-laws. In other words: it's neither 100 % free, nor massively paid. So why write an article about it? Because there are with a few exceptions, sinon ce n’est pas drôle 🙄.
Exceptions to be aware of
Parking may be charged in :
- some city centers. Particularly Basse-Terre & Pointe-à-Pitre; if you get around 45 minutes free parking after that, you'll have to pay 2/3 euros if you plan to spend a few hours there.
- busy tourist areas such as Deshaies, where parking has been subject to a charge since October 2024
- around certain beaches according to municipal decisions
- at the airport
Systems are evolving, but there are two golden rules to follow: always check local signage and plan ahead!
The aim here is not to set fixed rates or timetables (which change very often), but to give you an honest overview of how things work in Guadeloupe.
Pointe-à-Pitre
In a large part of the city center, parking is regulated. These include:
- marked areas
- parking meters (if you can find one that works, most are out of order)
- defined time slots
If you're coming to the market, the shops or for administrative purposes, it's best to plan ahead. On the outskirts, it's sometimes possible to find free parking, but it really depends on the street, and you'll have to walk a bit.

If in doubt, opt for one of the following parking lots:
- Port Autonome parking lot
- Place de la Rénovation parking lot
- Saint-John Perse parking lot
- Mortenol parking lot
They are usually secured by a barrier, and you can easily pay by credit card.
For more information on parking in Pointe-À-Pitre, please consult the commune's website.
Basse-Terre
There are also restricted zones in the city center. Around administrative offices and shops, parking is regulated. As always, signage is authoritative, but this time it's a little easier to find a functional parking meter. you can use the Pay By Phone application. As they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words, so I'm sharing with you the visual present on Basse-Terre site which pretty much sums up the city's parking rules:

Malendure / Bouillante
Malendure beach is one of Guadeloupe's most popular spots, particularly for diving and excursions. At Bouillante, the vast majority of places are free of charge. The only zones that really charge are :
Parking is organized in three sectors:
- Malendure beach
- Thomas's hot baths
- Red zone / Malendure 8am to 6pm, with a maximum duration of 4 hours.
- Yellow zone / RN2 (Galets sector) from 8am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm, up to a maximum of 9 hours.
- Red Zone / Thomas hot tubs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., maximum duration 4 hours.
Payment is made via a parking meter or the PayByPhone application. Outside these specific areas, parking in the commune remains largely unrestricted. But the real issue here isn't always payment, it's availability. In the high season, at weekends or during school vacations, spaces go fast.
Deshaies
Paid parking schemes have been introduced in certain tourist areas of Paris. Deshaies. This mainly concerns high-traffic areas. For this reason, parking meters have been installed in these areas. Parking is charged from Monday to Sunday, awith variable opening hours depending on the zone (from 6am, 8am or 9am to 7pm). There are several types of zone: short-, medium- and long-term.
On-site signage specifies the terms and conditions. In practice, payment can be made via a parking meter or a mobile application. It should be noted that residents of the commune benefit from completely free parking, subject to prior registration with the parking department. The aim here is to facilitate access to shops and tourist sites in a particularly busy commune, especially in high season.
Maryse Condé Airport
The airport parking lot operates a classic pay-and-display system: short-term, medium-term and long-term. If you're picking up a rental car, everything is organized to ensure a smooth exit.
Avoid peak hours
On Sunday mornings, some beaches become very busy. Particularly those beaches where you'll find carbets, ideal for large gatherings, picnics and barbecues. This is particularly true of Bois Jolan beach in Sainte-Anne 👇🏾

In short, arriving before 9.30-10 a.m. on the popular spots means you can avoid a lot of stress and enjoy the archipelago's most beautiful beaches all day long.
Agree to walk a little
Parking 300 or 400 meters away can save precious time on the way there AND back:
- Avoid 15-minute turns to find “the perfect spot” right in front of the beach or restaurant.
- Save you complicated manoeuvres in narrow or congested areas.
- Reduce the risk of getting stuck in a stream of cars all leaving at the same time (end of the beach, sunset, restaurant exit).
- Exit the parking lot more easily at departure, without waiting for someone to give way.
- Reduce the stress of tight slots and impromptu U-turns.
In practice, a 5-minute walk in peace and quiet is often quicker (and much more pleasant) than a 30-minute stay with the engine running, looking for a seat 2 meters from the entrance.
Adapting your schedule

Guadeloupe is not an anxiety-inducing destination. The vast majority of stays are uneventful. But some common-sense rules do apply:
- leave nothing visible in the car
- close doors and windows properly
- avoid visible bags, even empty ones
- favour high-traffic or well-lit areas
There's no need to overdramatize. Just adopt the same reflexes as in any other tourist destination. In the event of a problem, take the usual steps: contact the police station or call 17.
Where to park when renting accommodation in Guadeloupe?
This is where it gets a lot simpler. Unlike big cities, the majority of ZeWelcome villas have a private parking space on the property. And if not, as mentioned in the introduction, parking in residential areas is often free.
It's a point of honor we systematically check when selecting accommodation. So parking won't be a source of stress during your stay.
Mini FAQ on parking in Guadeloupe
Yes, in some municipalities, mainly in city centers.
In some regulated areas, digital solutions are available. But they are not widespread across the archipelago.
It's not complicated in itself. On the other hand, the beach is very busy at certain times of the year. The time you arrive and the day make all the difference.
As always, it's best to leave nothing visible. Common sense will suffice in most situations.
